IMSI catchers

Roger Critchlow-2
Lovely article this, http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-03-10/what-happens-when-the-surveillance-state-becomes-an-affordable-gadget.  The LTE network was supposed to be secure against IMSI catchers like StingRays and DirtBoxes, then Harris figured out how to knock the phone back to a 2G connection and all the 4G security went away.  And the price to replicate the $400,000 commercial version as a DIY instrument is quoted as $1,500, though I didn't see any pointers to how to articles.  But that is basically the cost of a low end SDR (Software Defined Radio) transceiver that can operate on the cell bands.

So everybody is catching cell phones with their pants down, now.

Re: IMSI catchers

Marcus G. Daniels

We wouldn’t want it to fall into the wrong hands, that’s for sure!   Who knows SDR equipment might get donated to the local Makerspace and they wouldn’t have thought about the consequences.  I don’t think they should be denied their tax deduction, though.  They had no way to know…
