Is this a situation that us sort of folks have special power to do something about.  

I was fantasizing hacking into a voting system and changing all the votes for George Bush into votes for a jackass,
but unfortunately I don't have the talent.

More constructively, shouldn't the American Association of Nerds, Geeks, and Other Programmers (AANGOP) write a letter to the Times?

Isnt AANGOP meeting at Jane;s tomorrow?
