Hi
Actually, the Virus is not confirmed in Colombia yet (Apr 26 - afternoon). There are 9 patients in Bogotá and 3 in Cartagena under examination. Authorities say patients are not seriously ill. Samples taken to them will be sent to Atlanta (USA) to identified what really it is. Take care Alfredo 2009/4/26 Douglas Roberts <[hidden email]> http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=106484775090296685271.0004681a37b713f6b5950&source=embed&ll=17.14079,-45.175781&spn=114.994624,178.59375&z=3 ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |

Hola
In the case of Mexico where virus seems to be fairly spread (more than 82 deaths), authorities are making some recommendations. Avoid to stay in places of massive presence of people, avoid to touch the face with the hands, don't kiss, wash the hands frequently, don't speak so close, use a mask; go quickly to the Doctor if present symptoms like fever and headache during more than one day. And if somebody is ill, must avoid to spread the disease by isolating. I hope that with a lot of common sense, which normally is no so common, maybe the impact can be reduced. I guess. Has anyone calculated the size of the virus and the size of the holes in those face masks everyone seems to be wearing in MEX? I suspect those are more of a psychological balm than a true prophylactic.

It's the water droplets from people sneezing and coughing around you that the masks are supposed to stop. The virus does not migrate in air by itself.

Tom,
I think the idea is that the virus needs droplets of water to get around in and they dont come in smaller sizes.

Hola
Is somebody following the trend of the number of deaths in Mexico. It seems that during the last days this number is (at least) folding each day. Yesterday late, deaths totalized 82 and in this moment (less than 16 hours after) there are 143. ¿How many can we expect for tomorrow? (what an horrible question). In Mexico people is asking why are patientes dying in Mexico and not in USA. Are because of differences in their Nutritional state? Maybe ther are other reasons. We've been around on this Swine Flu thing before: How many of you remember: "Swine flu!" I wondered about that question too. Is it possible that 6 decades of
vaccinations and other health "infrastructure" in the USA generally prevents random incursions of disease? I know viruses are different from bacterial infections. An analogy may be the condition of two neighbor's lawns. One has had no or minimal "weed" treatment while the other has had regular consistent weed treatment. The latter lawn is thicker healthier and there are less places for weeds, etc to take hold. Does that analogy apply to the US health infrastructure? Hi FRIAMers,
The new strain of swine flu is obviously very serious, and it seems wise to both become informed and take intelligent precautions now. Thankfully, the US has put years of effort into preparing for pandemic flu and is taking swine flu seriously. That said, I'd be a little skeptical of the more sensational reports we see on the net: Critiques about Niman's earlier 'alerts' for Avian flu: http://www.drmartinwilliams.com/h5n1-poultry-flu-and-migratory-birds/henry-niman-prophet-of-doom-for-the-internet.html His website: http://www.recombinomics.com/whats_new.html -Steve Wendel Douglas Roberts wrote: > http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=106484775090296685271.0004681a37b713f6b5950&source=embed&ll=17.14079,-45.175781&spn=114.994624,178.59375&z=3 > <http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=106484775090296685271.0004681a37b713f6b5950&source=embed&ll=17.14079,-45.175781&spn=114.994624,178.59375&z=3> > > -- > Doug Roberts > [hidden email] <mailto:[hidden email]> > [hidden email] <mailto:[hidden email]> > 505-455-7333 - Office > 505-670-8195 - Cell > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > ============================================================ > FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv > Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College > lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |
Other people have noted Niman's sensationalist tendencies as well. There are other data source besides his:
