Santa Fe Complex will host its grand opening on Saturday, June 14 with
a mixed media show entitled Emergence: The Interaction of Science &
Art from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 632 Agua Fria St. Part program, part
science fair, Santa Fe's artistic and scientific traditions will find
common ground in this special event to celebrate the newest addition
to Santa Fe's rich cultural and intellectual climate.

"Santa Fe is home to world-class scientific and artistic communities,"
said Stephen Guerin, the founder of Santa Fe Complex. "Both groups try
to express complex systems with the tools of their trade; the opening
of Santa Fe Complex creates a space for their creative interaction."

Artists Orlando Leibovitz, Paul Paryski, Jared Tarbell and Woody
Vasulka will display their work in an open house from 4 p.m. until
6:30 p.m.; there will also be a display of the work of German artist
Tim Borgmann. At 6:30, Mayor David Coss will open the evening program,
followed by a brief discussion on complexity and the Santa Fe Complex
led by Guerin and Steve Smith, retired LANL visualization scientist.
David Stout and Cory Metcalf of NoiseFold will end the evening with a
performance of their latest work.

Leibovitz describes the event as an opportunity to explore common
visions. "We usually think of art and science as polar opposites,"
Leibovitz said. "But many artists and scientists seek to explain the
apparent complexity of our world by striving for simplicity and
beauty. Emergence recognizes our shared values and creates a common
bond between our work." The Santa Fe based artist will showcase his
musical paintings that explore the relationship between sound and
light, music and color.

He will be joined by video art pioneer Woody Vasulka, who began
exploring the digital medium in the 1960's and continues to break new
ground in the computational art medium; Jared Tarbell, a self-
described "solar powered bipedal brain tower" and a leader in the
computationl art movement; Tim Borgmann, whose three-dimensional work
won an honorable mention 2007 International Art of Digital Show in San
Diego; and Paul Paryski, whose photographic explorations of complex
natural structures will complement their work. Tarbell and Vasulka
will return to Santa Fe Complex later this summer for individual shows
and discussions about mathematics and computer art.

Guerin will discuss the interesting artistic and technical
conversations that can occur using computer visualization to create
realistic models of human and natural activities. Smith will discuss
his efforts to expand visualization to three-dimensional models.

Doors open at 4 p.m. with a gallery showing of the artists' works
until 6:30. There will also be displays showcasing the work of members
of Santa Fe Complex. The event will open formally at 6:30 with
welcoming comments from Mayor David Coss.

NoiseFold rounds out the evening with a special performance beginning
at 7 p.m.. Known for their interactive visual-music-noise performances
that draw equally from mathematics, science and the visual and sonic
arts, Stout and Metcalf will be available for questions after their
performance ends at 8 p.m..

Santa Fe Complex supports arts, public policy and education through
collaborative work among people interested in the interaction of art
and science in our daily lives. Complexity science, which identifies
regular patterns in a world of ambiguities and constant change, is a
central tool we use in our collaborations but our primary mission is
to create a meeting ground for intellectually curious people from all
disciplines. We create the infrastructure they need to achieve their
goals and share the results with the public. By educating the public
about complexity, we create greater awareness of the rich potential of
our community and, for today's students in particular, economic
opportunities for their lives. Visit http://www.sfcomplex.org for more
information on Santa Fe Complex or call Don Begley at 505/216.7562.

The event is free to the general public. There will be light
refreshments, music and discussion areas.
