I didn't find the movie that frightening, despite the portentous style. I
love Google News and it allows small newspapers to be seen nationally and
internationally. On Middle East news, I can browse Israeli, Lebanese,
Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, etc. and other news sources together, and it
brings eyeballs to all of these that would never go there otherwise. I
suspect that it is actually a major source of revenue (by enhancing the
value of their ads) for online newspapers. Put out a paper, get Google to
distribute it, and make sure it has interesting content. I like that
business model. It is our global public square.

Nick - Mirabile dictu! We agree about something after all. This
picture is indeed the end of the era of human freedom--though
admittedly no more than a minority of humans ever achieved freedom
anyway. But the most amazing thing is that they don't even know it.
Googlezon is going to provide computer generated news stories drawn
from every source. But what sources are these? All the news gathering
organizations have disappeared, presumably gone bankrupt. There is just
one source left. All those personally tailored news feeds are coming
from government propaganda mills. Nineteen eighty four was just thirty
years late.
