Google Play

Google Play seems to be working pretty well.  Initially it failed to upload music well but I think it was a /. effect.  I found the next day that my mac mini server had uploaded 4,358 songs, my current collection.

The player works fine on my desktop, and hopefully will do fine on iPad/iPhone.  Not sure about TV yet, I think it'll take Google a bit of time to get that right.  No worries, my TiVo plays my entire collection already, along with all my pictures .. great to bore people to death about trips to Ireland and Italy.

iCloud still wins, alas, due to not uploading recognized CDs, and better yet, replacing them with the highest quality they have.  Current Applerati stunt is to "upload" to iCloud, back up iTunes, *delete all matched music*, and have iCloud download all their music to the upgraded quality.  Weird.  But its nice to have multiple places to backup your music and make it available everywhere.

It plays on the desktop via the browser, haven't tried it with the iDevices yet.

So we've got an embarrassment of riches here with Amazon, iCloud/Match, and now Google Play.  Still all sorta in beta, but looking good.  I still buy most of my music from Amazon, then somehow the system pushes it all to iCloud without my doing anything.  Spooky.

Well, that would be wierd.   Somebody else decides what "upgraded quality" is for some span of performances/recordings of the same piece.   Do I have per-piece choices or is it all or nothing?

Re: Google Play

So they have some box that figures out that its the same performance on the same day by the same artists of the same song from the same angle?

It simply means a higher bit rate version.  You can avoid it if you'd prefer.

This "upgrade" came for two reasons:
1 - Its way less storage to store one song for thousands of people
2 - Many, many folks initially recorded their music as compressed as possible, so this upgrade is very welcome by folks who did so.
