OK, I'm moving my email to gmail, finally. It's a work in progress: I've used IMAP to move my inbox and sent messages and am starting in on lots of folders.
The question to the list is: - What are the things you like most about gmail? - What are the things you dislike most? I'm not typically using the web interface however: Mail.app & Gmail can interoperate via IMAP. Seems pretty solid, but possibly Thunderbird would be a better client for this sort of thing. I'm making the change partly due to possibly moving to android from iphone. It looks like android and the google ecology are tightly integrated so I thought I'd take the plunge! So lets hear your experiences with Gmail and how you like/don't like its features! -- Owen ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |
I especially like the ability to store email in the Gmail folders AND subfolders.

One specific question: how does gmail work with mail clients? Phone client, Tablet client, laptop client, desktop client? Think thunderbird, safari, mail.app ...
I ask because gmail is not a standard IMAP system, its a google hybrid. -- Owen ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |
I've been using Gmail for three or four years now, both for my home and work accounts. I never bothered with mail clients, I just used the web interface; it was practical for me as I'm always hopping between various machines and I like to get to my email from whichever machine I happen to be on.
Owen, what are you looking to get from a mail client that you won't get from the web interface? —R P.S. I forgot to mention: I like Gmail a lot. The only problem I have with it is that searching is surprisingly clunky. Other than that, no problems. I have been using Gmail for about 5 years now, and have found it to interface very nicely via IMAP with Thunderbird, Mail.app, and my iPhone 3G. As far as I know, Gmail does have a full IMAP interface. The only reason I use Mail.app is because of its integration with other OS X apps, and the fact that half the time my internet connection here is down, so it's nice to be able to look through my mail archives without being connected. I don't particularly like the web interface, as it displays nested folders as tags with embedded slashes (e.g. Friends/SantaFe/FRIAM), and only dedicates a very small width to display them. With deeply nested folders, it shows up as Friends/Sant... or something ridiculous. Maybe I just need to stop using so many deeply nested folders...

The worst problem with Gmail is PRIVACY - you don't have any. You must assume that each and every email which passes through gmail is archived indefinitely (the copyright being with google). - Sarbajit On Sun, Jun 5, 2011 at 10:47 AM, Owen Densmore <[hidden email]> wrote:

An interesting point. So which webmail providers, ISPs etc. should we trust not to violate our privacy? And how do we know to trust them?
