GeoTools Demos

Friam mailing list
In order to get a bit more familiar with Geographic Information
Systems (GIS), I downloaded the GeoTools library that is being
used now by RePast for realistic GIS modeling (terrorism, city
planning, and so on).

I've made a web site of the introductory material for you
to look at if you are interested:
        http://backspaces.net/geotools/
The most complex one, and challenge for your browser is:
        http://backspaces.net/geotools/GraphApplet.html

Owen:

If you're interested in learning about GIS systems in general, there are really only two
systems that matter, and between them they share more than 90% of the global market. Both
are highly-evolved, very sophisticate systems:

There is ESRI in Redlands, CA. which was the world's first GIS company, and which produces
the widely-used ARC-INFO system. The creator of GIS, Jack Dangermond,  is the ESRI founder
and CEO. They can be found at http://www.esri.com.

The other is Intergraph, based in Huntsville, AL, and for whom I worked for 3 years, doing
international business development for large-scale project applications of their GeoMedia
system.  I believe that GeoMedia is the superior, most-advanced GIS system in existence.
It is particularly aimed at environmental and natural resources management, and defense
applications. ALL U.S. military and naval weapons systems are Intergraph based.

More interesting, however, is that GeoMedia is designed specifically for web-based use,
and it's really robust. I sold $46 million in Intergraph GIS systems to very large-scale
projects around the world (Hong Kong and Korean National Airports, and a National
Environmental Information System for the Colombian Ministry of the Environment, for
example) in the 3 years I was there.

Check out http://www.intergraph.com/gis/. I still have lots of friends there if you ever
need help.

Richard
