<DIV></DIV>&gt;Reinventing R&amp;D Through Open Innovation
<DIV></DIV>&gt;By Henry Chesbrough
<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Cambridge, April 30, 2003 - Since the days of Thomas Edison's Invention Factory, new product innovation has been the engine of long-term growth and a buffer in times of economic weakness for world-class companies. Yet even the most respected research powerhouses are struggling today to make innovation investments pay. Corporate R&amp;D labs once prized for their independence and proprietary research can no longer succeed alone. To increase returns on R&amp;D, companies must embrace open innovation - drawing on technologies from external networks of universities, startups, suppliers, and even competitors, and offering up their own technologies to outsiders.
