I started to answer this post on the sfX Discuss list thinking it was
the FRIAM list and realized that the link hadn't been sent to *this*
motley crue yet.
When I read Kelly's OofC nearly 20 years ago I was quite impressed/excited that someone had managed to write such a broad and accessible book on the range of topics he did. When I read the intro to the BOOTSTRAPPING COMPLEXITY site I was appalled at the criticism Lloyd directed at the book... then I picked up my (cover was faded!) copy of OofC and skimmed it, only to realize that the criticisms were quite apt for the current times. Kelly, as a popular science writer, was way ahead of his time and in fact did hodge-podge a lot of important/interesting ideas into one book with the constraint of making it accessible to educated laymen. I've not studied Lloyd's "remix" yet but I take Kelly's own endorsement is powerful. I look forward to re-experiencing OoC as a remix and I'm glad to see Kelly's reception to the work! Anybody else here run into this? - Steve _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Here's a reference of possible interest to some. From Kevin Kelly:
The
other day I got a note from a Danish guy who is a fan of my book OUT OF CONTROL.
He found my ideas great but my presentation "frustrating." But unlike
my other "frustrated" readers, Andreas Lloyd decided to do something
about it: he remixed my book!
I think the result is quite amazing. Remixing is perhaps too strong a word because he mostly simply dropped entire chapters, with a little re-arranging here and there. It is a very sharp but intelligent edit. But the effect is striking. Instead of a rambling book about one dozen things, Lloyd's remix of my book focuses it on the cybernetic and feedback aspects of the systems I was reporting on in the early 1990s. I suggested this focus needed a better title than OUT OF CONTROL, which I never was happy with anyhow, so Lloyd came up with a new one for this version of the book. He calls it BOOTSTRAPPING COMPLEXITY. ------------------------------------------------------------
