I've see a few presentations by Chris Adami and some of his grad students over
the years. Very cool stuff. Avida is close to Tierra in that it's looking at at
the evolution of self-replicating bits in a virtual machine. Though, Avida goes
much further quantitatively. Chris recently gave a talk at SFI on measures of
complexity where he looked at the joint entropy of the evolving genomes in his
population with respect to the environment.

Chris has a very good textbook-like intro to Artificial Life.
