Subject: Telephone Scam Warning "9-0-#"

SUBJECT: Telephone Scam Warning "9-0-#"
The Department of Homeland Security recently distributed a Federal
Community Alert regarding a telephone scam that allows unauthorized
individuals to have complete access to your telephone line. This
complete access enables individuals to place long distance calls and
subsequently have them billed to your telephone number. Information
indicates that the scam has been originating from many local
jails/prisons.
The scam works like this: an individual identifying himself/herself
as an AT&T Service technician will call and explain that he/she is
conducting a test on telephone lines. The caller then tells you that
to complete the test you should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound
sign (#), and then hang up.
By pushing 9-0-#, you give the requesting individual full access to your
telephone line, which enables him or her to place long distance calls
billed to your home phone number. UCB, Telecom-Pacific Bell, MCI,
Bell Atlantic, GTE, and Verizon have verified this process. Please
beware of this scam and DO NOT press 9-0-# for anyone.
If you feel that you may have been a victim of this scam at home,
please contact your local law enforcement department and your
telephone service provider. If the incident occurs in the NASA Ames
workplace, please contact the Protective Services Office at Ext.
