.. Don't forget the page scrolls both directions!

Nice way to get an idea just how big a billion is!

See, I always knew the world population wasn't *THAT* big, it fits into a single web-page after all!

And to Ron and Merle, you were right, you CAN get 7Billion people on the "same page!  And they all LOOK happy.

I tried zooming out with my cmd-"-" key and got down about 6 levels of zoom before it bottomed out.

Don't try printing this out at home... do it at work... over the weekend... bring a truck... or better yet, print it from your boss's computer...

I've run a browser over a screen as large as 6kx4k before, but there *are* powerwalls out there many times that large... (96 Mpixels or so?).  Even at 1 pixel/human...  that is 2 orders of magnitude shy?

I think in answer to Robert's question... zoom and scan until you find the one jumping up and down trying to get your attention!  Or just grep for the <blink> tag.

I took a gander at the page source... and naturally, it does not contain images of 7 Billion paper dolls.  I didn't drill down any further, has anyone else sorted how they do this?

For Nick's benefit, do they use iteration or recursion?

clicking through to the "WorldOmeter" was entertaining, but left me (as always) wanting more (context).

When/if we get ubiquitous volumetric displays, the webpage could be a 1000-person-wide cube; if the voxels-per-inch-cube-edge resolution was the same as the current pixels-per-inch resolution, the hypothetical cube would still be 6.25 meters to a side.

As to how they're doing it, just a few html tables holding a single .gif for each region.  But mouseovers show the number of an individual person in a tooltip.  An image map for that would be huge, so I assume they're calculating it somehow in Javascript from x/y position   Didn't look further.
