CAMPAIGN 2008: Science academies lend support to presidential debate push (Tuesday, February 5, 2008)
The push to mount a presidential science debate has gained steam, with several prominent scientific organizations signing on to cosponsor the event.
The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine announced yesterday that they would join the effort spearheaded by an unlikely coalition of Nobel Prize-winning scientists, lawmakers and bloggers.
"A discussion focused on such issues as how to spur innovation, improve science and math education, confront climate change and guide advances in biotechnology would do much to inform the American electorate," the presidents of the three science academies said yesterday in a joint statement.
Other organizations sponsoring the debate effort include the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Council on Competitiveness.
Climate change, drought, renewable energy, scientific innovation and education, and stem cell research are among the issues that deserve more attention as Americans prepare to pick their next president, the group's leaders say (Greenwire, Jan. 15).
