Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit My thanks to you all for inviting me to do the Friday applied complexity lecture. As an alien to the Friday dynamics in question, I thought the shift from garden to deck, and then the mobility on the deck, made for three/four different conversations with different people, all of which were pleasant and stimulating. Great for a visitor. Hello everyone! As a relative newcomer to the group (thanks for letting me crash the party!), I found this discussion thread quite interesting, and would like to add my nickel's worth. In the FRIAM get togethers I've been to, it has been primarily small 2-4 person conversations, with the chance to move around to several different groups. This has the benefit of allowing for more in depth, personal discussions, and is a great way for newcomers to get to know the group. The downside is that you often don't get to meet or talk with everyone, especially on the mornings where the group is large. I think the addition of a group discussion (maybe facilitated?) on topics of interest would help continue to define and enhance the group and its purpose, and there should be time for both, as Edy suggested.
How were these gatherings originally structured? What was the venue? Bruce made an excellent observation that more than 8 people in a single conversation will naturally break down into "side" conversations -- too hard to focus with that many people all talking together. That's why I'm wondering about a 'facilitated discussion' at the beginning, in addtion to some of the physical configuration changes Carl suggested Is that too formal? Jane's is a fabulous location for what we've been doing lately, and with some thought could be OK for a group discussion as well - as long as we all know the rules! Thoughts?
