*To help support everyone during Covid-19, Springer has released a ton of
free textbooks. This is great, but their web page for this is not super
friendly, and expects you to download some Excel sheet to figure out what
they have on offer.*

ACM also offers free access until the end of June. As you know ACM and IEEE are two of the biggest organizations in engineering and computer science.

Cool, more information overload :-). Also, I wonder how the authors feel about this.

Wow! Maybe now they won’t charge me $50 for each paper I wrote in their journals.

Ha! same. I wanted a physical copy of the AIP journal a paper of mine was in,
but I am not a member of any of the physical societies so it would cost me
$722.

Jon,

I found
https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2F978-3-319-29716-3.pdf on the
Springer List.

A collection of chapters on the "evolution of disease"  written for
clinicians.

Looks like it might be worth the time, if one had the time for it to be
worth.

Nick,

It does look like a good read, though your reminder is a good one. I wish
there were a decent app for predicting the value xyz information will be to
me, how well it will synergize with other experiences. OTOH, I know I would
get bored if my path were known to me. Ah, but I am very happy to have a pdf
copy of John Lee's text on smooth manifolds!

Yeah, reading a pdf is also an obstacle for me. I will *read* a book but my
experience thus far has been to only use pdfs for reference.

Dissenting opinion here. I dislike paper books. That said, PDF, i.e. preformatted content, only looks good on large screens like computer displays or large tablets.

I remember a great line from the 90s on the topic:

"you can't grep paper!"

Unfortunately I prefer physical books/paper for most circumstances and uses.    It is *great*, however that I have at my fingertips a huge collection of electronic documents formatted (usually) professionally, both online and downloaded.   Riches beyond my imagination 20-30 years ago.

Re: Free online Springer books

Gary Schiltz-4
I rather hate to admit it, but a good part of my preference for electronic versions of information these days is highly related to my lack of good reading glasses, which is in turn related to my laziness when it comes to getting out to buy some. Here in EC, I can't just go to the drug store to buy cheapies,
I would have to actually go to an optometrist (5 hour round trip), get an exam, go back a week later, and pick them up. With e-books, I can just change to a bigger font and/or zoom. Plus, I can read in the dark.

Dissenting opinion here. I dislike paper books. That said, PDF, i.e. preformatted content, only looks good on large screens like computer displays or large tablets.

You're lucky that you're willing to read PDFs.  I want to hold the book and my 🖨️ isn't robust enough to put out a whole book.

Re: Free online Springer books

ebooks are great, especially the epub format, which is far superior to
pdf.  I carry 2-300 books on my iPhone.  Easy to read in bed, too.  Too
bad the Springer site does not make everything available in epub format.

For textbooks or other explanatory text, having the extra real estate is handy for next to the computer.  My screens are full all the time with other stuff.

Re: Free online Springer books

Agreed.  Also texts with explanatory photos and/or illustrations which
you want to see full-sized.  But relatively little of my reading is in
that category.
