I'm delighted to hear that the first iPhone is GSM -- so works both

As a great example where pure markets fail, the US is plagued with
several incompatible cell infrastructures. As all of Europe knows,
competing on core technology is silly in the phone world .. compete
on nifty services. Now if only DoCoMo would start nifty GSM
services ...
