Subject: The CBI is Closing...But the Network Lingers On

To The Friends of the CBI,

Many of you have already heard, from us or elsewhere, that Cap Gemini decided to close the
CBI last December. As I have said to many of you and to the press, this decision is
consistent with the trends in the IT services industry, in which prices and margins are
falling and innovation originates increasingly with the software makers. We've heard from
many of you how dissappointed you are at the loss of a special place and associated
community but, as you'll see below, several elements of the CBI Network will continue.

We haven't written to our complete network earlier because we have been working on options
for keeping parts of the CBI's capabilities alive. We explored two deals to keep the CBI a
going concern, but were unable to make these work in the distressed climate of the fourth
quarter of 2002. Consequently, the CBI group is disbanding, with our people moving into
entrepreneurial positions ranging from developing a business around the CBI's Idea-X
software to tending bar in Belize. If you need someone's new contact information, please
let me know.

Happily, though, some CBI resources will remain available to you. First, the site at
www.CBI.CGEY.com will be up through the end of the month; you may want to browse it for
anything of particular interest. Second, the CBI's publications will be retained; any
requests should be addressed to Erika Toomey, [hidden email].

Erika, whom many of you know as the CBI's Director of Marketing, will work with Les
Fontaines, CGEY's Business Learning Forum, to continue two of the CBI's most popular
programs. She will continue building the Trends Consortium to a total of about twenty
clients and, in support of this program, will oversee the Future Scan research activity. I
will remain involved as Director of Research, and some former CBI staff will contribute to
the scanning research. In addition, CGEY leaders in Europe will continue to build the
Business Innovation Network. If these programs interest you, please get in touch with
Erika or me (see below for my new contact information).

I recently asked the CEO of Maxygen, a molecular biology company, about organizational
death. He sited Richard Dawkins' idea that "a chicken is just the egg's way of making
another egg." His view is that so long as the people and the ideas of an organization
outlive it and go on to affect others, organizational death is a healthy process that
spreads innovation. (This conversation appears in the last book written at the CBI, It's
Alive, www.itsalivebook.com) Certainly I believe that is what will happen with the people
and ideas of the Center for Business Innovation.

Today, innovation happens in networks, not Centers. For my part, I will continue to
develop network-based approaches to the CBI's mission: "To anticipate and shape the future
of business." I hope to connect to as many of you as are interested in this endeavor.

With thanks for your past--and future--support,

Christopher Meyer

I picked up Chris's book "It's Alive" today...I did a quick skim. It's not
bad as far as business books go. It can be used to reinforce Complexity
selling points with clients.
