*** SFI COLLOQUIUM Thursday July 10, 3:30pm ***
Location: Noyce Conference Room
Title: "Living Matter, Cause, and Explanation. Aristotelian Biology and
Its Ancient Sequels"
Speaker: Heinrich von Staden
Affiliation: Institute for Advanced Study, School of Historical Studies
Abstract:
This colloquium will explore central features of biological explanation
in ancient Greece. The focus will be on three recurrent, interrelated
issues that were sharply debated, especially in the fourth and third
centuries BCE. The first is the nature of causation. The second
concerns the conditions of scientific explanation, with particular
attention
to the supposedly adversarial relation between teleological and mechanistic
approaches to the explanation of biological entities and processes. In this
context the relation between matter, function, and 'purposive design'
played an increasingly central and controversial role. The third issue
is the epistemological and methodological response to the observation or
inference of exceptions to scientific 'rules' or 'laws'.
