Suzanne Iacono, The National Science Foundation > Title: Cyber-Infrastructure for the People: Getting There From Here The original freenet, free-access community networks, was a program advocated by Eric S. Raymond. There are still lots of freenets in the US and Canada, but the ubiquity of better 'net access is steadily eroding that community. Interestingly, USAID has sponsored freenets in the FSU and elsewhere. The current freenet is a set of software program intended to help those who face official censorship of the Internet and particularly the World-Wide Web. I don't know much about it, and I certainly haven't assessed its security. In some ways, the successor of the old freenet is the wireless community networks mentioned in a posting to this list over the weekend. -- Ray Parks [hidden email] IDART Project Lead Voice:505-844-4024 IORTA Department Fax:505-844-9641 http://www.sandia.gov/idart Pager:800-690-5288 |
