   The original freenet, free-access community networks, was a program
advocated by Eric S. Raymond.  There are still lots of freenets in the
US and Canada, but the ubiquity of better 'net access is steadily
eroding that community.  Interestingly, USAID has sponsored freenets in
the FSU and elsewhere.

   The current freenet is a set of software program intended to help
those who face official censorship of the Internet and particularly the
World-Wide Web.  I don't know much about it, and I certainly haven't
assessed its security.

   In some ways, the successor of the old freenet is the wireless
community networks mentioned in a posting to this list over the weekend.
