Artificial Societies and Social Simulation: Vol. 6(3) = published The Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation=20 (http://jasss.soc.surrey.ac.uk/) published the third issue of Volume 6=20 on 30 June. JASSS is an electronic, refereed journal devoted to the exploration and=20 understanding of social processes by means of computer simulation. It=20 is located at <http://www.soc.surrey.ac.uk/JASSS/>. It is freely=20 available, with no subscription. JASSS receives about 75,000 page=20 requests per month from readers all round the world (see=20 http://jasss.soc.surrey.ac.uk/stats/statistics.html). =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D In this issue, Stephen Younger describes a simulation of the fate of an=20 artificial society in which the social structures have some resemblance=20 to those of simple hunter-gatherer societies and explores the=20 implications of different strategies for food and material storage. =20 Zhigang Wang and Warren Thorngate investigate the social consequences=20 of balancing sentiment relations among triads of members of a larger=20 group, when balancing one triad can imbalance others. Results show=20 that, regardless of the starting configuration of sentiments, all=20 imbalances in a group are eventually balanced in a steady state=20 containing no more than two subgroups. There are two papers on simulating financial markets. Hiroshi=20 Takahashi and Takao Terano study a virtual financial market that=20 contains two types of investors, fundamentalists and=20 non-fundamentalists, and explore what happens when one or the other=20 type of investor predominates. Massimo Sapienza also uses a virtual=20 financial market to examine under what conditions agents who=20 incorporate option values when forming their trading prices obtain=20 higher profits. The issue also features the concluding three papers in the special=20 section on "Role-Playing Games, Models and Negotiation Processes",=20 edited by Olivier Barreteau: Patrick D'Aquino et al. describe an=20 experiment to provide people with the tools to build their own=20 participative simulations, William's Dar=E9 and Olivier Barreteau=20 investigate to what extent participants (Senegalese farmers) in role=20 playing games import their 'real' roles and rules of behaviour into the=20 game, and M. Duijn, L.H. Immers, F.A. Waaldijk and H.J. Stoelhorst=20 report on using a participative simulation to help policymakers deal=20 with the 'ill-structured problem' of dealing with traffic congestion in=20 an urban environment. In the Forum section, Michael Agar reflects on the problems and perils=20 of translating ethnographic conclusions into an agent-based simulation,=20 and K K Fung and Shekhar Vemuri consider the major impact that the=20 choice of initial conditions can make on the outcome of a simulation. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Peer-reviewed Articles =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Stephen M.
