Extension of Friday Morning Meeting

Jochen Fromm-2

Is is possible to take part in the Friday morning
meeting via Internet through ICQ or IRC ? My ICQ
ID is 336-972-234. We are living in the WLAN age
of global connectivity. The time difference should
be no problem, 9am in Santa Fe is about 6pm here in
Europe. What do you think of the idea ?

Sorry, I made a number of mistakes, the time difference for example is only
8 hours (9am in Santa Fe about 5pm here). Was it a bad idea to enlarge the
meeting? You certainly have a WLAN connection in the cafe? Or is there no
meeting anymore?

No, it's a good idea.  Next week I'll bring my laptop and vidcam.  I have
been successful connecting with a colleague in the Netherlands using Skype
for the audio and Yahoo Instant Messager for the video.  We have temporarily
been meeting in the St. Johns College Student Union.  There is a WiFi
connection, so we will just have to see how good/fast is the system.

Anyone in the Santa Fe group have an appropriate non-directional microphone
that would be good to pick up group discussions?  (Or would a directional
mic be better?  Sort of a "pass the talking stick" kind of thing.)

Hi Jochen --

I'm sitting here in the St. John's Coffee Shop discussing the
possiblities for connecting with the collected masses.  I didn't
realize it, but there is wireless access here, so it should be no
problem.  We'll probably try it out next Friday.

Jochen,

Sorry for the delay in responding. A group of us are at the Arrowhead conference
this week...

Our current meeting place at St. John's does have wireless though we're not sure
how dependable. The meetings are very informal that rarely have a conversation
that engages the whole group once the size is abobve 8 people. We tried web cams
briefly last year but found them to be disruptive to the flow of spontaneous
interaction. That said, perhaps the WedTech meetings would be more appropriate
to webcast as there is usually a more structured presentation. Those happen
around 1p on Wednesdays every few weeks. Are you available for those?

I do not know what WedTech meetings are, but Wednesday is of course OK, too.
I thought it would be nice to use techniques like instant messaging (AOL or
Yahoo Instant Messenger, ICQ) and chat (IRC) for something useful: to
exchange ideas, to discuss problems, etc. You usually do not meet people
interested in complex systems, complexity or emergence with these tools. It
would also be interesting to select each week (or month) a paper about
complex systems, swarm intelligence or ALife and discuss it online, like the
complex systems reading group (CSRG) from the University of Michigan. This
would probably generate too much traffic for a mailing list.
