Dumb Experiment

Frank Wimberly-2
Me: OK Google, speak to Alexa

Google: Alexa, will you be my friend?

Alexa: Sure, I'm always happy to make new friends.

They must have anticipated that someone would try this.

Me: Siri, speak to Alexa.

Siri: That may be beyond my abilities at the moment.

How boring.

Alexa isn’t much of assistant, but I am impressed with the new Fire TV stick.    Pretty much all premium content is available now through apps, and even DirecTV itself, and most other stuff is free with Amazon Prime.

Does anyone in the Santa Fe area use fixed wireless internet (e.g. NMsurf)?   They claim they can do 50 Mbps for about the price of Comcast’s higher-end Internet services ($75-$100/month).   I can hardly believe it is possible.

These TV add-ons are the way to go.  Smart TV firmware never seems to be maintained and is clunky compared to Fire TV or Chromecast.  To finally be free of having to co-locate televisions with coax drops would be nice.

Better yet would be to free from wires entirely, unless the wire was fiber and was 1Gbps.

Re: Dumb Experiment

Steve Smith

Marcus -

I have been using NMSurf/CNSP for about 5 years but at a lower level of service.  I get most of what I need from them with their 5-10Mbps.

They do have frequent but short interruptions in service which might be ideosyncratic to my context, but might reflect the vagaries of trying to keep such high tech gear running up on top of Big Tesuque where my service comes from.  I believe they also have antennae on top of Pajarito Mtn and Cerro Pinon further north, one of the foothills of the Sangres... the latter may be generally more reliable with easier access.    My service has been out for up to 1.5 days, but that was rare, and a consequence of an early snow with electric service and the backup propane generator running out of fuel, etc.

Line of Sight is the main consideration for service... fresnel zones included.   I had to prune some trees and mount my antenna 30 feet from my house (on an adobe wall) to get a good shot, their installation techs were typically under-informed but *did* have a good process that worked in spite of their limited model of how their own gear worked (or not).

Overall I would recommend them.

Thanks.   One of my favorite things is the hotspot feature of my phone.   If that could just be 10 times faster, I’d be set.   I have a nomadic ideal, even if I’m a creature of habit.  Permanent installs make me feel pinned-down!  On the other hand I do like gear.   Gosh, so many decisions.
