The computational lab I'm supporting uses PLoS, in part
because the science is more interdisciplinary and in part
because of their use of the creative commons license.
The University of Texas does have 'group' subscriptions
to most of the major journals on-line as well as a fabulous
library, but even in this circumstance, there are many good
reasons other than cost to use free (as in speech) journals.
Perhaps if we just start paying more attention to journals
like PLoS and publishing preferentially in those...the concept
will just take over, and CC will become the defacto standard.

NB could we please consider editing out most of the original text in
response, particularly when responding to the digest? We could easily
calculate the exponential growth of digest size if everybody quoted
