I'm not sure that this is similar, but here's a link to an email tracing
tool using Google Maps and http://www.hostip.info/:

Cool.  These same guys also have a neat mashup of global webcams.

"This is a Google map of unprotected/open camera streams obtained from Google
searches<http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=+inurl%3A%22axis-cgi%2Fmjpg%22&btnG=Search>.
The IP addresses for each camera's url has been mapped to it's

Here <http://del.icio.us/bmuller/goocams> is a del.icio.us tag with the best
cameras found so far. The pr0n cameras are easter eggs. Digg

The Design Institute (DI) develops advanced research, educational programs and interdisciplinary partnerships to improve design in the public realm.

Established as one of the University of Minnesota's Strategic Interdisciplinary Initiatives, with recurring funds from the Minnesota Legislature, the DI addresses products, systems and environments, as well as the underlying social processes that bring our everyday material landscape into being.

The DI is particularly interested in the design implications of emerging technologies - in the nexus of communications media and public space.

Looking beyond issues of styling, the Design Institute regards design as a strategic mode of thinking, a form of conflict resolution whose tangible outcomes express successful negotiation of diverse values and interests.

The Design Institute's Fellows program, workshops, publications and events foster new models for collaboration between diverse fields of inquiry.

By supporting the development of new prototypes, and enabling young practitioners to create their next significant work, the DI champions expanded design choices to enhance citizens' lives, in Minnesota and nationwide.

HostIP

Owen Densmore

In reply to this post by Tom Johnson
I'm pretty impressed with HostIP mentioned below.
   http://www.hostip.info/
Apparently they're using the community to get the IP<>GeoLocation
mapping.

I'm sure its been done, but it would make a Geo-traceroute work
nicely.  The API is fairly nice too, even integrating nicely into the
unix shell!

One thing it suggests is a way for an agent based model to run on a
globe:
   http://backspaces.net/models/globe/applet/
It shouldn't be difficult to simply have nodes with ip addresses
planted on the globe and have  edges connecting them for modeling
purposes.  Using Google Earth instead would be better, but heck, at
least its possible with simple hacks.
