Senior Research Scientist – Data Analysis

Location
Johnston, IA

Job Purpose

Provides scientific leadership to enable the development and application of computations approaches for the analysis of data from multiple diverse databases, to facilitate trait discovery and intellectual property protection.   Proactively works with scientists from across the Agricultural Biotechnology (ABT) organization on experimental design and analysis strategies.  Provides leadership and technical oversight for a core team of data analysis scientists.  Establish and oversee internal research and external collaborations for the development of new multidimensional data analysis techniques.

Duty/Responsibility (% of Time)

1. Provide scientific leadership for and contribute to the development and utilization of computational approaches to enable the analysis of data from multiple internal and external databases encompassing a diverse array of analytical, biochemical, genomic and phenotypic data.  Critical aspects of this effort will include:                    (60%)
* Working with ABT scientist to optimize experimental design
* Facilitate the building of data warehousing, reporting and visualization tools
* Database alignment
* Data preprocessing
* Applying state of the art statistical, data classification, network/pathway assembly, and prediction model development    techniques to the analysis of data and report results.
* Optimizing data visualization formats.

         Project objective will include:
* Facilitate biomarker discovery and development of trait phenotype prediction models
* Generation of candidate gene and/or biochemical pathway lists
* Generation of testable hypotheses relevant to trait discovery/development
* Placing biomarker and trait leads in the context of biological pathways and networks. 
* Quantitative trait loci analysis


2. Provide scientific leadership and technical oversight for a core team of international data mining scientists, who will support experimental design and complex data set analysis for clients from across the Agricultural Biotechnology (ABT) organization.  Recruit, hire, supervise, evaluate and develop assigned technical staff.  Collaborate with key ABT scientists and leaders to establish annual program critical operating tasks and budgets.  Monitor and evaluate progress of staff members against annual critical operating tasks.  Work with leaders from across ABT to develop and enable multiyear strategic growth plans.                                           (20%)

3.  Remain active in the international data mining/data analysis scientific community.  Conduct research internally and through external collaborations.  Maintain technical knowledge base appropriate for a recognized expert in the field.  Attend relevant scientific meetings and participate in key external technical working groups related to data analysis technique advancement.   Establish and oversee internal efforts to create new data analysis techniques, methodology and software.   Establish and manage external research collaborations. Develop and maintain professional relationships with key external program who are leaders in the area of multidimensional data analysis.  (20%)
