To follow up on last week's thread on WiFi...
There was an article in Monday's Albuquerque Journal business section about a company called Roadrunner Wireless that's getting ready to offer WiFi based Internet in Rio Rancho, and Albuquerque at a later date. This is surprising because cable and DSL broadband covers much more of this area than Santa Fe. Their pricing model doesn't seem revolutionary since they're suggesting the price range will be $20 to $99 for around dial-up like speeds to 3 megabits. There was no indication of how many hotspots they are going to deploy, but from my experience they are either going to need a lot, or have to deploy some very high gain antennas at the customer sites. Perhaps a hybrid solution? At these wavelengths, the signals don't penetrate obstacles like homes and trees very well. A few years ago I took this question to a spreadsheet, and it didn't look favorable when one took into account installation costs that included cabling, antenna, and lightning arrestors. I'll be keeping an eye out for this. Perhaps I'll point my parabolic grid reflector in their direction;-) Chris >From: "Dr. Richard Cassin" <[hidden email]> >Reply-To: The Friday Morning Complexity Coffee Group <[hidden email]> >To: "The Friday Morning Complexity Coffee Group" <[hidden email]> >Subject: RE: [FRIAM] Citywide WiFi >Date: Thu, 11 Dec 2003 17:05:19 -0700 > >Because MOST of Santa Fe (the City) has broadband connectivity (DSL or >cable). > > > >-----Original Message----- >From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]]On >Behalf Of Frank Wimberly >Sent: Thursday, December 11, 2003 1:52 PM >To: The Friday Morning Complexity Coffee Group >Subject: [FRIAM] Citywide WiFi > > >http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/12/11/sprj.ws.wifi.city.ap/index.html > >Why doesn't Santa Fe do this? > >Frank >--- >Frank C.
