[Sorry if this is a bit nerdy, but if you're thinking about a
MacBook, its worth knowing]
Well, after trying to see a current MBP (the 17" MB is called the
"Pro") at Baillos, our local Apple retailer, and failing (they only
had the last generation on display) and listening to folks here about
the options (more memory, glossy screen, disksize), I found out that
the best possible deal was Amazon!
Yup, that's right. They had just gotten their Apple allotment ..
took about 2 months. But they sell the vanilla MBP (matte, 160GB
disk, 2G RAM) for $2,649.99 (no shipping, no tax, $150 rebate, fast
shipping [overnight for $4, 2 day free]) while the Apple site is
$3,012.42 ($2,799.00 + $213.42 New Mexico tax, and longer shipping
times). Note: we have Amazon Prime, the yearly fee for fast
delivery, which helped.
That's a considerable savings, $362.43, and faster shipping. The
only downside is lack of flexibility in options, but I'm fine with
the standards. I beamed into Other World Computing, the Mac
hardware company, and they have the 3G upgrade for the same price now
as Apple, so I'm comfortable waiting if need be.
I was skeptical they could get it here overnight, but according to
the tracking info, its out for delivery today, as promised!
