Activity over holidays?

I'm going to be in the Santa Fe area from 12/27 until 1/3 (first visit to the states since I left in 2008), and would love to get together with FRIAM friends, old and new. I know this is probably the time of least activity, but I was wondering if there will be a WedTech on the 28th? I certainly would like to get together for FRIAM - do you still meet at St. John's? What time?

Also, does anyone have advice on how to get around SF (or between Pecos and SF) without a car? I don't suppose that in the three years I've been away that reliable bus service has magically sprouted. Or inexpensive taxi service. I've gotten spoiled with the taxis in Quito, where a 15 minute taxi ride usually costs under two dollars. This will be just about the first time since I was a teenager that I haven't had access to a car (I let my NM license expire, and haven't yet bothered with getting one for Ecuador).

Hi Gary,

You sound exactly like me! I moved to London and never bothered to get a licence, letting my NM one expire. I visited Santa Fe with my folding bike a few years ago and it was actually really useful to get around. There's some good bike/pedestrian paths nowadays.

There's also the Rail Runner for getting down to ABQ. It's pretty infrequent though, only 1 an hour on weekdays but its something. All in all, if I ever move back to Santa Fe, I'd try to see how long I can go without getting a car.

I am afraid I would urge you to rent a car at the airport, if that is at all
possible. Or come to town on the Rail Runner and ask Entprise to pick you
up at the depot in santa fe, if you want to avoid the airport rental fees,
assuming they are greater. Cycling around Santa Fe in winter would be,
unless the drought continues, dangerous.

Myself, I am not entirely sure I will be in town for that last Friday in
December. If I am, I suspect that at least Frank and I will get together
for coffee somewhere. I think St. Johns will be shut up like a drum and I
am sure they will have no food service. So, now is perhaps for folks to
propose alternative venues. Otherwise we are likely to end of at D.S.,
which has reasonable food and good coffee, but is likely to be nasty-crowded
on that day.

As of tonight, with the snow and black ice, I would say cycling in
anything like this might be contraindicated.

That said, it's a dry snow as these things go.

I believe Gary said that he, like me, has lost his licence by moving overseas and not being able to renew.

Of course, whether or not to cycle depends on conditions and other options for most people. That being said, the Danes don't seem to have any problem with ice in winter and you can improvise snow tyres with zip ties if you're in a completely snow covered environment. I did this after the blizzard last year on my commute (St. Albans to Hatfield, Herts) and it was sort of okay. People in more northern areas would just change out their tyres for snow tyres during winter.

But, if its relatively dry around these days, it shouldn't be a problem at all. You would want to wear warm clothes, but not as warm as if you are just standing around, otherwise, you'll get too hot. Oh, and a bike lock...
