A Modest Query

Peter Lissaman
Does anyone know why Excel SOLVER gives unrepeatable (unspeakable) results
for a simple variation problem? A high order wave equation.  I'll give
details if you e-mail me.

Re: A Modest Query

Hi Peter

I'm afraid Excel has a long and grubby history of not getting math quite right (just google "excel math errors" and see how far they go back). For your hard-croe analytics it might be worth while taking a look at some open source options such as Sage (http://www.sagemath.org/) or R (http://www.r-project.org/). If you need any assistance with either of these, there's quite a few Santa Fe/FRIAM members who are proficient with one or the other.

Best regards,

Robert
