You can use whatever series of characters you want. E.g. (8^) is a happy bald person. >8^D is an evil smile. Etc. It's not trolling. As Marcus mentioned awhile back, it's a way for the author to manipulate *how* a string of words is received by the audience.

My use of Rot13 encoded text *was* trolling, though. 8^D

Ha! Yes, the question always boils down to whether or not one gives the metaphor-maker the benefit of the doubt and assumes they don't foist targetless metaphors upon us.
